Palolem Beach of Goa is one of the best we have in the state. It is a nice clean big beach where one can choose a lot of water activities like kayaking, boat ride, surfing, etc.

Palolem Beach, South Goa is located approx 45 kilometers from Margao (Madgaon) and approx 75 kilometers from Panaji (Panjim), the state’s capital. It’s between Agonda beach to the north and Patnem beach to the south.

Palolem beach is situated in Canacona in the South of Goa. It is a place that attracts many visitors both domestic and International. Palolem Beach is indeed picturesque and serene. This beach gives a vibe of real Goa and is known for is its calm waters. You can opt for a boat ride and visit Monkey Island, Butterfly Island & Honeymoon Island.
Watching dolphins in the middle of the ride is indeed a delight to the eyes and gives you an amazing experience.

The shoreline consists of wooden bungalows, restaurants where you can dine the best Goan cuisine. It has a lot of decent cottages for tourists where one can enjoy a beautiful view of the sea. Visit the Monkey Island

Take a boat from the northern end of the Palolem beach to Canacona Island or Monkey Island. It is surrounded by a lot of rocks and is a delight to watch the island. It is named after the monkeys that live there on the island. Keep your camera on the on-mode to capture any special moment with the monkeys.

Enjoying a walk to the  Monkey Island and spot this island to your right on entering the beach. You have to walk across the rocks where the water sometimes has high tides that make it difficult to walk. Explore a network of trails and take on an adventurous walk on this island.

Feel the Butterfly Island

Butterfly Island lies towards the north along the waters.  It is located approx 200 meters from the mainland and the boat will take around 5 to 10 mins to reach there.   The dolphins are very acrobatic in the waters surrounding the island. The scenery around Butterfly island is worth seeing and keep your camera ready for ideal shots.  It has a very steep beach and very deep right from the edge of the island

Honeymoon Island

A little ahead of Butterfly Beach lays another exotic island located between two hills. It is known as Honeymoon Beach because it is not accessible by foot and only a few ventures to discover it. This hidden beach is famous amongst lovers and newlyweds and a great spot for nature lovers.

Visit Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary

Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary is situated in the Canacona Taluka of South Goa. The best time to visit the sanctuary is from October to December. The sanctuary is open from 0700 till 1730 for people.  There are six observation towers and approx 8 trails in the sanctuary. There is a  ‘tree top’, which is situated about 20 meters high on a tree overseeing a waterhole. Gal and Talpona rivers of Canacona Taluka both originate from this sanctuary.

The sanctuary consists of an ecotourism complex that houses the nature interpretation center, cottages, toilets, library, rescue center, canteen, and Range Forest Officer. The lesser-known animals in the nature preserve include the Flying Squirrel, Slender Loris, Indian Pangolin, Mouse Deer, Four-horned Antelope, Malabar Pit Viper, Hump-Nosed Pit Viper, White-bellied Woodpecker, Malabar Trogon, Malayan Bittern, Draco or Flying Lizard, Golden-back Gliding Snake, and Malabar Tree Toad. Velvet-fronted Nuthatch, Heart-spotted Woodpecker, Speckled Piculet.

 

The best time for a boat ride to these islands is either in the morning at 07:00 or in the evening around 17:00 when you can see the setting sun from the boat.  There are quite a few guys running these boats and it would be best to talk to 3-4 guys before you strike a deal, a good rate would be Rs 400-500 for an hour-long ride. You need to bargain really hard with the boatsman to strike a good deal.
